Auri and Dani have been friends since they were in elementary school. Growing up, they did not see many representations of interracial friendships like theirs on TV, and Ladywood, in part, is a reaction to this homogeneity. Our series is important because representations of female friendships in media are often too homogenous, and we present a different narrative.
Dani and Auri last collaborated on The Spot, which Dani starred in, and Auri wrote and directed. The Spot won the sole Faculty Commendation in Comedy at NYU's 2014 First Run Film Festival, in addition to craft awards in acting for Dani and in screenwriting for Auri. The Spot has screened at The Unmentionables Film Festival in New York, and is set to screen this fall at the Marfa Film Festival in Texas, and the Norrköping Film Festival Flimmer in southeast Sweden.
